David Shrigley takes over Sketch

Oh good god, just when Sketch couldn’t get any cooler, doodle legend David Shrigley has utterly transformed the Gallery into a pink paradise! Having spent many nights of my younger pretentious art-school years at Sketch (primarily in awe at the amazing Loos), I may have to go back and witness this candy floss haven. Shrigley has followed in the foot steps of balloon-man Martin Creed, who’s Sketch commission took place in 2012, but this time 239 pieces of Shrigley’s work line the walls of the pink room making it his largest ever exhibition of his original drawings. This retro room reminds me of a room that may feature in the hotel setting of ‘The Shining’ – there is definitely something eery about it. On the other hand, I’m sure Harry Potter’s Dolores Umbridge would feel right at home…(to anyone who hasn’t watched the H.P movies… this woman loves pink)!

Shrigley has also created some ceramic tableware to accompany the food served, with his distinctive funny drawings and text. At least there’s something to cheer people up when the food is served – fine dining always serves tiny portions…now if they served pizza that would be a different story. You can pop in for afternoon tea though, which is much more appealing. I will definitely try to pop along before the commission is over.

I’ve done a few edits inspired by the Shrigley room – fashion, beauty and home ware…
